Commercial cPanel Hosting

I strongly recommend that you get a good commercial hosting package, for example from:

Hosting Shop
I use HostingShop.com.au and recommend their cPanel packages

A cPanel (Control Panel) package looks like this:

As you can see, it enables a lot of fancy stuff that I don't use, such as Chatrooms, Password Protection etc. I do, however, use and appreciate such functions as the easy Mail administration, the Hotlink protection, Addon domains (only an extra $10 for each extra domain you host through the package), Subdomain statistics. All great value for only $125pa.

Within about 24 hours of your buying a cPanel Junior package through my link, you'll get several emails. Two are very important for you to keep. One will have Domain Management details (eg an enetica login) and the other will be called Welcome to Hosting Shop and will have your cPanel, Mailserver, FTP and other important details.

To Setup new Email Accounts:

From the cPanel, Mail > Manage/Add/Remove Accounts > Add Account > Create

Once you've created it, you can check the email web-based from hostingshop.com.au although remember that until you clear the mail off your server, it will be using up some of your Hosting package's webspace. For this reason, it's best to actually "Pop" the mail down from the server to your lsocal computer, for example using Microsoft's Outlook or Mozilla's Thunderbird. I'm not going to go into detail about how to set up a New Account in the various email clients available, but it's worth noting that your ISP (who you pay for your internet connection) probably prevent you from using any Outgoing Mailserver other than their own, so you'll need to have that set to whatever they specify.

To Create Addon Domains:

You get one domain included for free in your $125 pa cPanel Junior package. If you want to subhost, that domain will be the parent site, although that doesn't really affect the subsites in any way - Addon sites appear and behave as completely independant sites on the web in all respects. Addons cost $10 each extra with my hosts.

Firstly, you need to buy the new domain, eg at HostingShop.com.au and point it using your Domain Management (eg enetica) toward your two nameservers listed in your Welcome To Hosting Shop email. If you already own the domain, you should have some login interface to change your nameservers - ie to point your domain to your hosting.

Once you've pointed the domain at your hosting, you need to indicate that you're accepting the domain from within your cPanel. In the example given here, the parent site is jarrahweb.com and there are 5 Addon sites available (ie, an extra $50 was paid).

From the cPanel, Addon Domains > New Domain Name/User (Directory) Name/Password > Add Domain!

Once you've created your Addon Domain, you can create Email Accounts related to the new domain in the same way as listed above.

You can also FTP to the Addon Domain. We'll cover FTPing later, in Uploading, but the one thing that is a bit different with FTPing to an Addon domain is that the Username is the name of the folder@parentsite.com - eg if jarrahweb.com had an Addon domain retrokat.com called subdirectory retrokat, the Username for FTPing would be retrokat@jarrahweb.com - this is the only time that an Addon behaves differently to a parent site or one that just has it's own hosting package. Don't worry - that will mean more when we actually get to Uploading!

If you can't afford to get a Hosting Package though, don't worry - there are free alternatives.
